Assignment brief 2: Task Two

Market Research:

I held a focus group to find out which types of idents prefer and why they prefer these particular ones. Initially i asked my focus group what their favourite ident was. After i asked this question i found out that most people didn't know what an ident was, so after explaining they told me what they looked for in a good ident and what there favourite ones were. I found out that idents that match the channel and that are really bright and funny are the more popular idents because they appeal to more people and encourage people to watch the channel for longer.

The following idents are the ones that i showed to my focus group and asked them questions about each ident.



For the CBBC ident the focus group said that they like that is very long because it grabs the attention of the children that are watching it. But they said that they didn't like the fact there was so much going on during the ident so they didn't know where to look when watching but it was still very eye catching and kept there attention.



For the CITV ident the focus group said that they like the idea of using a chameleon to catch the rest of the logo to form the whole thing together. But they said they didn't like the idea of the 'C' being the mouth of the chameleon. They went on to say that the design of the mouth look out of place and didn't really fit the ident.



For the Cartoon Network ident the focus group said they like the idea of the letters un-zipping their selves to reveal a different letter, they said this because they found it very humorous that the letters got in a competition to see who can un-zip themselves the quickest. They also said they didn't really like the colour of the background because they believed that it would mainly appeal to girls because pink is usually associated with being a 'girly' colour.



For the Boomerang advert the focus group said they enjoyed watching it because it is a very simple idea but it is very eye catching because it is set in space, in a park and underwater and most children are fascinated with these places so it would be appealing to most kids. The down side was they didn't like some of the colours, for example the colour of the planet/moon they are standing on should have been a different colour because there was too much pink in the scene.

For my ident the focus group expect to see something that is very appealing so something with bright colours and quick movements to keep the kids attention. They do not expect to see anything that would confuse them because they may not understand more complex things. They also expect to hear good sound effects so when the kids listen to the ident as well as watch they would be even more interested in watching the rest of the ident and watching the channel for longer.

I also asked my focus group what type of ident they would like to see on the channel and why they would like to see an ident like this. The responses i got were very similar. Most of the focus group would like to see a ident that matches the channel and it has to be very bright and be funny so they can enjoy the ident more and be drawn to the channel which will cause them to watch the channel for longer. I also found out that they would like to see a ident that is different from the other types because they are getting tired of seeing the same type of idents on different channels that they watch.
