Assignment brief 1: Task Four

Task Four

Different types of idents on children's channels


This is a ident from a popular kids television channel called CBBC.
  • During this ident you see loads of different blobs making different shapes.
  • The music that is playing along is there too catch children's attention because it sounds different and because of this they will watch the channel more.
  • The ident lasts roughly 13 seconds which is long enough to grab the viewers attention because it is different.
  • The tempo of the ident is quite fast but at the start it is slow and then speeds up a considerable amount.
  • This certain ident appeals to the viewers because it is different and stands out from other idents that the viewer may see on different channels which make them memorable. The ident is made like this so that it appeals to young kids because that is what the channel is specifically aimed at.
  • The ident is entertainment led because there is no information given it is just purely made for entertainment purposes only.
  • The impression i get from the ident about the channel is that it is quite fast paced and it made for children.

This is another ident from a popular children's channel called Nickelodeon.

  • During this ident you see the name of the channel bounce into the screen
  • The design of the advert was quite simple which tells me that the channels viewers may prefer simpler things which gives me reason to believe that it is for children.
  • The ident only lasts for 2 seconds which is quite fast but it is long enough for just a quick break between shows.
  • The ident is very fast paced as you can tell because it is only 2 seconds and the speed that the different letters bounce into place on the screen.
  • It appeals the the target audience because it is fast and simple which makes it eye catching because anything that moves fast on the screen will catch children's attention.
  • This ident is just purely entertainment purposes but there may be a small reason for it being informative because it tells you what channel that you are currently watching.
  • This ident tells me that the channel is simple but quite fast paced and that it is suitable for children because it is what they like.

This is also another ident from a popular children's channel called Cartoon Network

  • During this advert you see blocks that have letters on bounce all over the screen and the form to spell the words 'Cartoon Network'.
  • The ident looks like it was detailed made even though it looks quite simple. I believe this because they have got chequered ceiling and floor which is continuously going which may have been hard to create.
  • The ident lasts for 14 seconds which is long enough for a break between programmes and enough time to catch the viewers attention.
  • The ident is normal paced because the letters aren't bouncing at high speeds but yet they aren't bouncing at a slow pace.
  • It appeals to the target audience because it is eye catching and different which every child likes because if they see something new they wanna see it again.
  • The ident is both made for entertainment and informative purposes because it is eye catching and it tells the viewer what channel they're watching.
  • The ident tells me that the channel is very professional and they know what their viewers want to see.

This is also another ident from a popular children's channel called CITV.

  • During this ident you see a mysterious shadow swimming in a washing machine and then the camera zooms in to see what it is and an animated shark jumps out with a yellow mouth which forms the 'C' from the channel name CITV.
  • The ident looks very professional because they were mixing animated with reality and they have made an ident which is different and stands out.
  • The ident lasts 9 seconds which is long enough to grab the viewers attention and long enough to have a quick break between programmes.
  • At the start of the ident it is quick slow but when the shark jumps out and the CITV is formed the ident is very fast paced.
  • It appeals to the audience because it is different and stands out from other idents that they may have seen before.
  • The ident is made for both entertainment and informative purposes because it shows you a shark swimming around which entertains you and then it shows the name of the channel which is informing you.
  • The impression that i get from this ident about the channel is that they know how to entertain their viewers between programmes and that they have taken the time to find out what would catch the viewers eye and keep them watching their channel.

This is also another ident from a popular children's channel called The Disney Channel

  • During this ident you see little sparkles on the screen and then the Disney Channel logo being drawn and then taking place in the bottom left hand corner.
  • The ident looks professionally made because it is different but simple so it would be very appealing to people.
  • The ident lasts 30 seconds which is a long time between programmes which is probably for having change over in the broadcasting studio.
  • The ident is quite slow paced because it takes a long time for anything really eye catching to do anything which may cause some viewers to stop paying attention or lose interest and change the channel.
  • It appeals to the audience because it stands out from other idents that they may have viewed on different channels.
  • The ident is made for both entertainment and informative purposes but i believe that it was mainly made to say what the channel is that the viewer is watching.
  • The impression i get from this ident is that the channel is professional but sometimes that just need and longer break between channels because they may need to change things around.
Summary

In summary i have noticed that all of the idents at some point say what the channel is or leave hints to inform the viewer what channel is that they are watching. I have also noticed that overall the idents are quite fast paced to catch the viewers attention and to keep them interested in the channel. Finally i have noticed that they are mainly quick idents and don't last too long. If i could use what i found out from these idents in my own i would make my ident quite fast pace, short and tell the viewer what the channel is that they are going to be watching.

Main Idents



These idents use a key theme of doing individual letters and then in the end form the channel name of CBBC. These idents are different because not many channels make 5 individuals animations during one ident because the channel is trying to make them stand out from all of their competition and be better than them. The idents that CBBC make could be shown at any time of the day because they will always be suitable because their channel is specifically made just for children so if its suitable at one point of the day it would be suitable for another time of day. The ident will appear next to any programme that the CBBC channel is going to show because they practically match the type of programmes that the channel airs.

Task 3 - Understanding the design of suite of television idents



This ident appeals to the audience because you can tell that it has been made for children because of what the ident has in it and the way that it sounds. Also this ident could be shown at any time of the day because the channel is made for children so this type of ident would be acceptable for them too watch and any point. This ident it made to be shown at most parts of the year except for seasons like Christmas, halloween or special events. The message that this ident conveys about the channel is that it is made for kids and it is fun because of all the bright colours and the noises that this ident has.



This ident also appeals to the audience because it is bright and it sounds fun. So because of this you can tell that the target audience of the ident and channel is made for children because it is being shown on a children's channel and the noises that it is playing and making during the ident. this ident is intended for any time if the day because the channel is a children's channel only so it would really matter what time of day that it is on. This ident is made for any time of the year because it is will always be suitable. The only time that this ident won't be acceptable is at seasonal times of the year such as Christmas, halloween and other big events during the year. This ident conveys that this channel is fun and suitable for children because the colours of the ident are bright and the music sounds fun.



This ident appeal to the target audience because it is bright and it sounds fun. So because of it being fun and bright you can tell that this channel has been made for children because of the ident. This ident could be shown at any time of the day because it will always be suitable because it is being shown on a kids only channel which means it is mainly children that is going to be watching it. This ident would be shown at any time of the day because it is constantly a children's channel so it wouldn't matter what ident is being used during the day. This ident can be used at any point of the year except from seasonal events such as christmas, halloween and other big events this is because it is just a general ident and isn't intended for anything else. This ident conveys the message that the channel is fun and for children because it has bright colours and has fun music playing for the children to enjoy.

Assignment brief 1: Task Two

Task Two - Understanding the limitations of the television ident

Typography

Typography is a limitation of idents because you cannot have text too big/small or too much text. Also a limitation is that you cannot use fonts that are too hard to read because if you used it in an ident for the scheduling of the channel the viewers wouldn't be able to tell what is actually going to be shown on the channel. Typography could be important in an ident because if you use the right size and font it would be very efficient and people would be able to easily read what is wrote on the screen. Also if you use the right type of font people may be attracted to the ident because it is appealing and stands out.
















These are types of examples of typography idents because they are text that shows in between shows.

Colours

Colours is also important because if you use dark colours certain people may not want to watch the channel because they may think that it is a dark and dull channel. Also if you are trying to get peoples attention and you use dark and dull colours people may not be bothered to watch it where as if you use bright vibrant colours people would be attracted to it. Colours can also be very important in idents because if you use bright and vibrant colours people would be attracted to the ident because it is bright and stands out. They would use bright and vibrant colours because people are generally attracted to bright colours. Also the colours that you sue could show what type of channel it is that you're watching, for example bright colours for kids channels or dark colours for horror channels.



This ident is relevant to colours because they try to keep everything within the the same colour boundaries and kept the colours the same as what people will relate to the channel.

Aspect ratio

Aspect ratio is another thing creators of idents have to take into account because if they create the ident to large when it comes round to fitting on televisions it would not show all of the ident and may cut out important things. Also if it is too small people may not be able to read or see what is being shown in the ident. Aspect ratio can also be very important in an ident because if you fit it too the right size people would be able to see the full ident and get the full idea of the channel that they are currently watching. Also if the creators do the aspect ratio correctly the ident would be really effective and people would be able to get the full effect of the ident.



















This is an example of what sizes the idents would have to be made on for them to fit screens.

Adhering to a desired tone
Adhering to a desired tone is important because if you change the tone half way through the ident so you for example you go from something like a bright and happy ident to something dull and sad it wouldn't be a good idea. It wouldn't be a good idea because people wouldn't be able to get the general idea on what the channel is actually about. Adhering to a desired tone is important in idents because if you are a horror channel you would want a dark ident so if you stick with the same tone of darkness all the way through the ident people would be able to tell that the channel is for horror/dark shows.



This ident is adhering to the desired tone because they are sticking with the childish things and making the ident fun and eye catching.

Duration

Duration of idents is important because it cannot be too long or too short. The idents need to last the right amount of time because if you are showing the scheduling of the channel and it only lasts for a short amount of time the viewers wouldn't be able to see what is going to be on because they would probably only be able to see one show that is going to be shown. The duration of the channel is important because if you are having a change over in the studio you would want the ident to be long enough for the change over to happen but not to long for people to lose interest in the channel.


These are two different lengths of the same ident to show how effective the duration of the ident can be.

Assignment brief 1: Task One

Task one - understanding the purpose of television idents and the opportunities they present











Some idents could be made to identify the channel that you are watching. For example this was BBC's first ident which they named 'Batwings' because it looks like a pair of batwings.





Idents can do all different kind of things for example this ident is telling you the schedule for the channel which is helping them know if there is anything on later on on this channel.


Some idents are made specifically made to provide a break in between programmes so that the studio crew or the broadcasters can have a break or sort out the next load of programmes that are going to be aired on the channels.

As well as identifying the channel an ident also gives the audience the chance to receive information about the channel. An idents aim is to appeal to the channels target audience by setting the tone and pace of the channel. Idents generally matech the type of channel they are representing. For example BBC FOUR was generally for factual and informative shows so the idents are going to match this.



For channels creating a brand is very important because if someone somewhere sees one of the BBC's logo then they would be able to stand there and relate the logo to the channel and think what ever the logo is on is good because it reminds them how good the BBC channels are.






The BBC has different logos for different channels or shows that they air. For example BBC News and BBC Sport. They do this so viewers will be able to differentiate between the two and it will also help them identify what is going to be shown on the channel.






They would also use idents to set the tone and appealing to the target audience. They do this so it draws the viewers in more and it also helps them know what types of shows are going to be on because of the pace of the idents.







Also the BBC will be able to create marketing opportunities because businesses would be wanting the BBC to show their products in shows that they air so the businesses could make money because viewers see their product and go out and buy it. BBC may do this because businesses would pay for their product to be use in one of their shows.



The BBC created a special ident for the olympics. They done this because they will be showing the viewers that the olympics can be viewed on this channels, because of this more people would tune into their channels to watch this big event. They also chose this event because they know it would be a popular event to show and it would appeal to a lot of people.
